Barley grown as a cover crop is a green manure (once uprooted serves as a mulch and soil amendment) that improves soil structure, reduces occurrence of weeds, attracts beneficial insects and increases the organic matter available to your soil. The deep, fibrous roots take up and store excess nitrogen. This cover crop is heat and drought tolerant. The barley cover crop can protect and enhance your garden soil in preparation for the next planting season.
Barley can also be used as:
- A food grain crop used in breads, soups, stews and health products,
- Animal fodder,
- A source of malt for making alcoholic beverages (buy Malted Barley here: https://www.organicsmatter.co.za/shop/malted-barley/)
